Magazine Double page spread analysis

I couldn't find any Bachata magazine double page spread so i used Vibe which is quite similar to the Bachata genre.

Sunday, 17 November 2013

Draft of my article.

Is Bachata music complicated to learn?
Discovering the Bachata genre changed their life as they jumped many hurdles when the couple learnt the steps to producing Bachata music which had a certain rhythm to it but overall this gave them a great outcome after 2 years of studying the Bachata genre.
J___ says" We discovered Bachata when we went to Elephant & Castle for an outing. We never knew this area was a Latino based area, hearing these Bachata songs playing out loud got us into learning more about this genre." The couple spent about 2 years learning the basics of Bachata music and learning the Spanish language. "It didn't take us long to learn these things as we were really interested in Bachata. If you're willing to learn something, the time it takes up wouldn't matter as long as it benefits you." These words from J___ inspired their children to reach their goals.

"If you're willing to learn something, the time it takes up wouldn't matter as long as it benefits you."

Was learning Bachata movements complex as learning how to make the music?
When we were doing our research we discovered that Bachata did not only have a certain rhythm to it but there were dance moves to it as well. These moves includes the couples knees bent, hip motions from left to right and vice versa and a lot of footwork. Popping your hips every four counts is the essential step to it.
"When I started learning the basic Bachata dance moves, I was struggling! When I watched the videos of couples dancing Bachata I was shocked, there was no way I could learn to dance the way they did." These words from J___ was unbelievable as I have seen her moves and she looks like one of the professional Bachata dancers I have seen on competition videos.

Case Study Magazine

VIBE
It is a music and entertainment magazine and it mostly features RnB, Hip-Hop artist.

Quincy Jones launched Vibe along side with her partnership Time Inc in 1993.
Before the masthead 'Vibe' was given Vibe used to be called "Volume",but the co-founding editor Scott Poulson-Bryant changed it.
The publishing house of Vibe is InterMedia.
Vibe is based in New York City. U.S.
The frequency of magazines being published is quarterly.

Vibe today:
They release magazines every two months.
To get a hold of Vibe magazine you have to subscribe which is £16.99 for two years which gives you 12 issues and £9.99 for one year which is 6 issues.

Target Audience:
Vibe is aimed for 18-30 year olds.
However the statistics of males and females reading it is quite equal. 50.5% are males and 45.5% are females.

Vibe uses many iconography that has something to do with Hip-Hop such as Caps, sunglasses and jewellery (mostly chains).

Vibe's closest competitors are The Source and XXL however, they owned their success due to the broad range of interest they include in their magazine which attracts more readers.

Contents page analysis

The genre i chose to do is Bachata/Reggaeton but i found it quite difficult to find a magazine that was about bachata/reggaeton so i chose to do magazine that were quite similar to them. RnB and Hip-Hop is similar to bachata/reggaeton because of the beats to the song.

Another Front Cover Analysis

Record Label Case Study

Sony Music Entertainment is an American music corporation owned and operated by Sony Corporation of America.
In 2004 Sony Music Entertainment merged with Bertelsmann Music Group to create Sony BMG Music Entertainment but later it was renamed back to Sony Music Entertainment when Sony was able to get Bertelsmann's 50% of Sony BMG making them have 100% ownership of the whole company.
SME is the world's second largest record company behind Universal Music Group.
SME has many artist's signed to their label and my artist case study 'Prince Royce' is signed to Sony Music Entertainment.

Music Magazine Planning Ideas

The music genre I chose to do is Bachata/Reggaeton.
Bachata and reggaeton is quite the same. However, reggaeton is more fast pase whereas bachata is more for slow dancing.

My masthead will be called "Bachatera". I am using this for my masthead as my genre is about bachata but also the word bachatera is for girls who likes to listen and dance bachata.

My headline will be "

My target audience is young adults (girls) from 15+ because "Bachatera" means a girl who likes listening to bachata and also who likes dancing bachata.
It would be distributed for everyone who wants to learn more about bachata and reggaeton but also its for latino people who wants to know any new songs for the genre or wants to catch up on any bachata/reggaeton related topics.

My masthead would have a curvy type font to it as it will show that it is aimed for girls and also having a more creative curvy type font would attract girls more instead of using block capital letters like most magazines.

The shots I am thinking of using is either a mid shot or full body shot.
I am thinking of taking a mid shot because it will show a couple together the boy being behind the girl and the boys hands will be on the girls shoulders, both smiling at the camera.
The full body shot would be if the couple is going pose in a way that it looks like they're doing a dance move but they're looking at the camera at the same time making it look like the camera is where they are going when they dance.

Mise-en-scene:
The location i am thinking of using is mainly dance halls because they usually have good lighting also dancing is mainly in dance halls due to parties or any lessons.
The clothing for the girl would be a dress above the knees or a skirt. The dress or skirt would be a red/pink colour to because the genre is mainly about romance. The top would be a white sleeveless top.
For the boy he will be wearing a suit but with no tie and the shirt will be in red to show romance.
For props the girl might be holding a rose to show more about romance in bachata.

For my sell lines I would be based around people entering any bachata/reggaeton competitions or attending any lessons to learn how to dance bachata or to learn new/more bachata dance moves.
My sell lines would also include an exclusive interview with a well known bachata artist/s such as Prince Royce or xtreme.

My double spread page would be how a couple discovered about Bachata music and how it got them to start making bachata music along side with discovering there is a certain way to dance bachata and how they started learning how to dance to bachata songs.

Headline ideas:
- Bachata, new music we never thought we'd find.
- Discover a whole new world of Bachata.
- Bachata puts us on the spotlight.

Student magazine photo shoot

I wouldn't use this picuture as it is landscape and to conform with the magazines convention the image should be portrait not landscape.

This image is landscape however I wouldn't use this picture as the background of books is balanced with the image and the actual image is squashed at the bottom it is not the center.

I will be using this image as the model is centered at the middle, it is a close up shot and it conforms with the magazine's convention.

School magazine ideas:

1. My magazine will be called 'Study wise'. I decided to call my magazine 'Study wise' because my magazine will be all about studying for your exams.
2. Target audience for my school magazine will be from ages16-18 because this magazine is aimed at students doing their A-Levels.
3. My photo will be taken at the St. Angela's site, my model will be a female and she will be at the TLC. I chose this location for my magazine as the library is the most used area to study by students.
4. My shot will either be a close up or mid shot, the model will be sitting down with a folder, textbooks and exercise book in-front of them. This would link to my headline 'Study wisely to succeed!'.
5. The sell lines will relate to my magazine topic - studying properly to succeed.

Front cover pencil sketch

This is my magazine front cover sketch. I decided to do my magazine layout like this as most magazines are like this. Also this type of layout conforms with magazine convection's.
